About the programme
The Pathway Certificate for Foundation Studies is an NZQF level 3 preparatory programme at Lincoln University that builds a grounding for academic study and helps students settle into university life. It carries 60 credits and takes half a year of full-time study.
The certificate lays foundations in four areas: academic writing, mathematics and statistics, science, and the environment. Students strengthen their writing and language skills for higher-level study, improve their numeracy, and learn about the context, priorities and challenges of studying at Lincoln, a university known for its land-based focus. By the end, students understand not only the subjects but also how university study works.
The study plan is short and clear: two compulsory courses in academic language and writing and in mathematics for tertiary study, plus two electives chosen from science, statistics and the fundamentals of the New Zealand environment. All students also take part in a programme field day. To complete the certificate, students must pass both compulsory courses and two electives and attend the field day.
The certificate leads on to the First-Year Pathway Diploma and from there to a bachelor's degree. Note, however, that it is not a University Entrance qualification on its own. The programme is taught on the Lincoln University campus and suits students who need academic preparation before starting a degree.
