Online MBA with an international degree: what to choose

How an MBA differs from a Master of Management and "MBA courses", what AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS mean, an MBA in Auckland, and why online study gives no NZ visa.

An MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a master's degree for working managers; in New Zealand it is a level 9 qualification on the NZQCF (formerly NZQF), like any master's. An online MBA lets you earn it without moving, but a distance programme gives you neither a student visa nor a work visa. So the first decision is whether you need only the degree or the degree plus work and life in New Zealand. Nairi International University (NIU) does not run a joint online MBA. This page is an honest guide instead: the MBA in NIU's catalogue, business master's that need no management experience, and the MBI with an online start for people who want management, IT and a move.

MBA, business master's and "MBA courses": the difference

MBA Master of Management / Master of Business Courses called "MBA"
What it is a master's degree for practising managers a master's degree in business and management training courses, not a degree
Level in New Zealand 9 9 not an NZQCF qualification
Work experience usually required often not needed not required
Student visa and work after study yes, with on-campus study in NZ yes, with on-campus study in NZ no

An example from one university: the University of Auckland's MBA requires a bachelor's and at least 3 years of relevant management experience, while its Master of Management is designed for graduates of any field with no work experience (careers.govt.nz). Put simply, an MBA is for people who already manage and want structure; a Master of Management is a way into management.

Accreditation: AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS

Business schools can hold voluntary international accreditations:

  • AACSB (USA) accredits a business school as a whole;
  • AMBA (UK) accredits individual programmes, such as MBAs, DBAs and specialist master's;
  • EQUIS (EFMD, Brussels) is an institutional accreditation.

Fewer than 1% of business schools worldwide hold all three, the so-called Triple Crown; in New Zealand, the University of Auckland Business School was the first in Australasia to achieve it (University of Auckland).

These accreditations do not replace the national quality system. In New Zealand every level 9 programme is approved, through CUAP and AQA for universities and through NZQA for polytechnics and private providers. For a private provider, the key indicator is its NZQA category after external evaluation; how to check it is explained on Accreditation and partners.

No management experience? Business master's

Experience requirements differ and are listed on each programme's page.

Management and IT with an online start: the MBI

The Master of Business Informatics (MBI) is not an MBA but a master's in business informatics: managing digital transformation and IT where they meet business. We mention it here because people working between business and technology who want to move often consider it instead of an MBA.

  • A joint programme by NIU and ICL Graduate Business School, level 9, 180 credits, about 16 months.
  • The first semester (60 credits) is online with NIU from home, starting in any month, followed by an academic year on campus at ICL in Auckland.
  • Entry: a bachelor's in business or IT with an average of at least 50%, or work experience in business or IT.
  • IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 6.0) for the ICL stage; not required for the NIU stage.
  • The first stage costs USD 2,499 per semester; the on-campus stage is costed individually.
  • Graduates receive an NIU certificate and a Master degree in Business Informatics from ICL. After the on-campus year at ICL they can apply for a 3-year post-study work visa, provided INZ requirements are met.

What an MBA or business master's costs

  • Plus living costs during on-campus study: the visa minimum is NZD 20,000 a year.

How is an MBA different from a Master of Management?
An MBA is for practising managers, usually with two to three years' experience or more; a Master of Management is designed for graduates without experience. Both are level 9 master's degrees.
Does NIU offer an online MBA?
NIU does not run a joint online MBA. The catalogue includes an on-campus MBA at Auckland Institute of Studies and, for people working between business and IT, the MBI master's with an online start (which is not an MBA).
What are the entry requirements for the AIS MBA?
A degree or recognised professional qualification plus at least two years of relevant experience (or a business bachelor's with an internship added), and IELTS Academic 6.5 with bands from 6.0. Level 9, 180 credits, 18 months.
What are AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS?
Voluntary international business school accreditations; fewer than 1% of schools hold all three. They do not replace the national quality system: in New Zealand, level 9 programmes are approved by CUAP/AQA or NZQA.
How much does an MBA cost in New Zealand?
Education NZ puts postgraduate study at about NZD 20,000–45,000; Lincoln University's Master of Business, for example, costs NZD 57,000 for the programme in 2026. Add NZD 20,000 a year in living costs for the visa.
Can I do an MBA without work experience?
Usually not; an MBA requires management experience. Without it, look at business master's such as the Master of Management at ICL or Yoobee or the Master of Applied Management at NMIT.
