Living and working in Auckland, New Zealand, as a student comes down to three numbers: a median rent of NZD 250 a week for a room in the centre, a student fare of NZD 1.55 for a one-zone trip with the 40% concession, and a minimum wage of NZD 23.95 an hour, with up to 25 hours of work a week allowed on a student visa. Universities estimate a year of living in Auckland at NZD 20,000–27,000 excluding tuition. There are no Auckland-specific visa rules: the conditions for work and study are the same across the country. Below: housing, transport, work, healthcare and a checklist for your first two weeks.

Housing: what it costs and how to rent
Prices. Weekly median rent from Tenancy Services, February–July 2026 (Tenancy Services):
| Property | Central Auckland (Auckland Central) | Avondale (west, for comparison) |
|---|---|---|
| Room | NZD 250 | NZD 255 |
| One-bedroom flat | NZD 442 | NZD 490 |
| Two-bedroom flat | NZD 550 | — |
| All properties | NZD 470 | NZD 600 |
Options for students. The University of Auckland estimate quoted by Education NZ runs from NZD 140 a week for a room in a shared house to NZD 484 for a catered hall of residence (Education NZ). The most common choice is a room in a flat, a house or apartment shared by several people.
Bond and tenancy. By law the bond is no more than four weeks' rent, and the landlord must lodge it with Tenancy Services rather than keep it. Rental rules, tenants' rights and how bonds are refunded are on the Tenancy Services website. Do not pay a bond straight to a landlord without a tenancy agreement and a bond lodgement receipt.
Getting around
Auckland's buses, trains and ferries run on one card, AT HOP (Auckland Transport, fares as at 13.08.2026):
| Trip | Adult fare | With the 40% student concession |
|---|---|---|
| 1 zone | NZD 3.00 | NZD 1.55 |
| 2 zones | NZD 4.90 | NZD 2.90 |
| 3 zones | NZD 6.50 | NZD 3.90 |
| 4+ zones | NZD 7.90 | NZD 4.75 |
The concession is for full-time students at Auckland providers with a registered HOP card. The cap is NZD 50 for 7 days on HOP (NZD 20 a day on a contactless bank card), and transfers within 30 minutes count as one trip. Agency websites sometimes still quote a 20% discount; that information is out of date.
Working while you study
The rules are the same across New Zealand (INZ):
- up to 25 hours a week during study, for visas granted from 3 November 2025;
- full time in scheduled holidays if the course is at least a year and 120+ credits;
- no hours limit for research master's and doctoral students;
- no self-employment;
- compulsory practical work within the programme does not count towards the limit.
Pay. The adult minimum wage is NZD 23.95 an hour before tax from 1 April 2026. The starting-out and training rate is NZD 19.16, but students aged 20 and over are entitled to the adult rate (employment.govt.nz). 25 hours at the minimum wage is NZD 598.75 a week before tax (our calculation), roughly enough for a room in the centre, groceries and transport.
Tax. To work you need a tax number, an IRD number, from Inland Revenue (ird.govt.nz); without one your employer must deduct tax at the highest rate.
Rights. Migrant students have the same basic employment rights as citizens, including the minimum wage and holiday pay (employment.govt.nz).
Healthcare and insurance
- Insurance is compulsory for a student visa for its whole length: medical and travel cover that meets the Code of Practice 2021 (INZ). It is usually arranged by your provider; at Lincoln it costs about NZD 899 a year.
- Injuries are covered in New Zealand by the government ACC scheme, including for visitors (acc.co.nz); illness and routine doctor visits are covered by your student insurance.
- The emergency number is 111 for ambulance, police and fire.
Your first two weeks: a checklist
- Temporary accommodation for 1–2 weeks: a hostel, a hall of residence or a short-term rental. It is easier to choose a long-term place on the ground.
- A local SIM card: mobile plans start from about NZD 19 a month (Education NZ).
- A New Zealand bank account for your wages and rent.
- An IRD number before you start work (ird.govt.nz).
- An AT HOP card, registered for the student concession.
- Enrolment at your provider: orientation, student ID, confirmation of insurance.
- Long-term housing: a tenancy agreement, the bond lodged with Tenancy Services, a viewing before you pay.
- Job hunting: a CV in the local format, within the limits of your visa conditions.
What a month costs
Our calculation for a single student renting a room in central Auckland comes to about NZD 21,900–24,000 a year, roughly NZD 1,825–2,000 a month excluding tuition. That covers rent, groceries (NZD 80–120 a week), transport, a phone plan, insurance and the student services fee. The full table is on Cost of study and living.
After graduation
A master's graduate who studied on campus in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks can apply for a 3-year post-study work visa, an open work visa for any employer (INZ); see Post-study work visa. If you are coming with your family, read about partner visas and schooling on Studying with your family.
