An intake is a start date on which a provider takes in new students. In New Zealand the academic year follows the calendar year, and public universities have two main intakes: Semester 1 in late February or early March and Semester 2 in mid-July. International applicants usually need to apply by about 1 December and 1 June respectively, and then allow time for a visa. Private providers have more intakes. On NIU's joint programmes you can start the online stage in any month of the year, and ICL Graduate Business School has six intakes a year.

How the New Zealand academic year works
- Two main semesters. Semester 1 begins in late February or early March, Semester 2 in mid-July, with a short mid-year break between them and the summer holidays in December and January.
- Summer School runs in January and February; at the University of Auckland in 2027 it runs from 6 January to 17 February (UoA).
- Extra intakes. Lincoln has a November intake, and the University of Auckland runs a quarter structure for some programmes (Quarter One from 18 January 2027).
- Trimesters. Some universities divide the year into three periods, so check your provider's calendar.
- Private training establishments and many polytechnics take students several times a year, and some programmes start "anytime".
Deadlines: why you should apply earlier than you think
The official deadline is the last day applications are accepted. As an international student you then need a student visa after your offer. INZ decides 80% of applications within 8 weeks and recommends applying at least 3 months before you travel (INZ), and an X-ray and police certificates take time too.
University of Auckland deadlines for 2027 (UoA):
- most bachelor's programmes for Semester One: 8 December 2026;
- LLB Part II/Honours and the Graduate Diploma in Teaching: 1 December 2026;
- Bachelor of Nursing for international students: 1 November 2026;
- medicine, pharmacy, optometry and Medical Imaging: 1 July 2026 (already passed);
- Semester Two for international students: 8 June 2027.
Lincoln University deadlines for new international students (Lincoln): Semester 1 2027 — 1 December 2026; Semester 2 2027 — 1 June 2027; November 2027 intake — 1 September 2027. Deadlines are later for applicants already in New Zealand.
Late applications are sometimes accepted if places remain, but then there may not be enough time for the visa.
A preparation timeline
Indicative plan for on-campus study starting in February–March 2027 (our guidance, not a provider requirement):
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 9–12 months before (February–May 2026) | choose a programme and provider; assess your English and start IELTS preparation if needed |
| 6–9 months before (May–August 2026) | sit IELTS; translate documents; request police certificates if required |
| 4–6 months before (September–October 2026) | apply to the provider; receive your offer |
| Before the deadline (November – early December 2026) | complete every document for the application |
| 3–4 months before (November–December 2026) | lodge the student visa: offer, NZD 20,000 in funds, X-ray, insurance |
| 1 month before (January 2027) | visa decision, flights, accommodation |
| February–March 2027 | studies begin |
For a July start, shift everything by six months: apply to the provider in February–April and for the visa in March–April.
When to start NIU programmes
Joint programmes at Nairi International University (NIU) begin online, which removes the main intake problem: you do not have to wait for February or July to start studying.
- Master of Business Informatics (MBI), NIU + ICL. You can join NIU in any month. The first semester (60 credits) is online, followed by an academic year on campus at ICL in Auckland at one of ICL's six intakes a year; about 16 months in total.
- Bachelor of Business Information Systems (BBIS), NIU + ICL. The first academic year is at NIU by distance, then on campus at ICL; the whole bachelor's takes 24 months, six trimesters of 16 weeks.
In practice you start the online semester while preparing IELTS and visa documents, and join an ICL on-campus intake already enrolled in the programme. An adviser will confirm the next NIU start dates and ICL intakes, which change every year.
How to choose an intake
- February–March is the start of the academic year: more programmes and courses, easier to settle into a cohort, and moving in the New Zealand summer (December–January) is convenient.
- July suits you if IELTS or the visa cannot be ready by February; some providers offer fewer programmes at this intake.
- Extra intakes (November, quarters, "anytime") suit you if speed matters, but check that your programme is open at that start.
- For families, a start that matches the beginning of the New Zealand school year (also early in the year) is easier; see Studying with your family.
Dates for catalogue programmes
Each programme in the NIU catalogue has its own dates, confirmed by the provider for the programme and year. For example:
- Master of Management — ICL — ICL has several intakes a year;
- Master of Information Technology — AIS — a private provider in Auckland;
- Bachelor of Information Technology — NMIT — a polytechnic with main starts in February and July.
English requirements are on the English language requirements page, and the visa on Student visa.
