About the programme
The Bachelor of Information Technology is an accredited NZQF Level 7 programme at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) that prepares IT professionals for work in business and industry. It carries 360 credits over 3 years of full-time study, with a part-time option.
The degree covers both the theory of computing and how computers are applied in organisations. Students build a broad base in software development, technical support and networking, together with databases, computer systems architecture, systems analysis and design, and web development.
The first year consists of eight compulsory Level 5 courses. From year two students follow one of two majors, Systems Development or ICT Infrastructure, and fill the rest of their credits with electives; the choice of major can wait until the start of the second year. Both majors finish with a Capstone Project. Each year has 36 teaching weeks and 6 weeks of study break.
Tutors bring industry experience, strong academic backgrounds and professional links, which keeps the teaching practical and applied. For those not yet ready for a degree, NMIT offers Level 5 pathway programmes in IT, technical support and web development. The programme is taught in Nelson.
