About the programme

The Bachelor of Applied Computing Technologies is an NZQF Level 7 programme at Whitecliffe that takes students from core IT skills to a chosen specialisation over three years of full-time study (360 credits). The specialisations are artificial intelligence, data analytics, network engineering, cyber security, and software and web development.

Year one builds the groundwork in hardware, networking, operating systems and introductory programming. Year two goes further with data structures and algorithms, software testing and maintenance, and enterprise networking, plus electives such as data visualisation, data analysis, machine learning, full stack mobile development, cyber technician skills and ethical hacking. A dedicated Emerging Topics in AI course looks at current AI research and how it is being applied.

In the final year students take cloud-native application development, a second enterprise networking course, time series analysis and cloud security, with electives in natural language processing, interaction design, and applied cryptography and blockchain. The courses were shaped with industry input so that content tracks what employers need, and the degree finishes with a capstone IT project that includes an industry placement.

Most of the teaching staff hold PhDs along with industry certifications and active research profiles. The degree suits students aiming for AI research, secure cloud engineering or interface design. Graduates can continue to the Level 8 Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology or the Level 9 Master of Information Technology, with specialisations in data science and cyber security.
