Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is a vocational and professional tertiary institute serving Te Tauihu, the top of New Zealand's South Island, with roots going back to 1905.
About
NMIT traces its history to 1905 and has always seen its role as supporting the growth of Te Tauihu, the Nelson and Marlborough region at the top of the South Island. Its focus is applied vocational and professional education, with the goal of producing graduates who are ready for work and confident in what they can do.
There are more than 100 programmes, from certificates through to degrees and postgraduate study. The institute highlights specialisms that few other providers offer — Adventure Tourism, Aviation, Engineering, Aquaculture, Maritime, and Viticulture and Winemaking. It has also announced, together with aircraft manufacturer NZAero, an expansion of aviation engineering training into Hamilton to help tackle a long-standing shortage of aircraft engineers.
Industry links are part of how programmes are built. Tutors come from the sectors they teach and keep their connections there, every programme area has its own Industry Advisory Board, and courses are developed in partnership with employers. Learners get hands-on work and placement opportunities as a result. Joining NMIT also plugs students into its network of industry partners and the job opportunities that come with it.
International collaboration dates from the mid-1990s and has produced partnerships with a number of overseas institutions. More recently, NMIT signed three new maritime agreements linking New Zealand with India and Oman.
What stands out
- Niche specialisms. NMIT says it leads training in Adventure Tourism, Aviation, Engineering, Aquaculture, Maritime, and Viticulture and Winemaking — fields that are rarely taught elsewhere.
- Over 100 programmes. Options run from certificate to degree and postgraduate level, delivered on campus, online or on the job.
- Industry advisory boards. Each programme area has a dedicated Industry Advisory Board, and programmes are co-designed with industry partners.
- Smaller classes. Class sizes allow more one-to-one time with tutors, and a busy events calendar helps students get to know each other.
- Ways in for everyone. STAR Academy, Trades Academy, Foundation Studies and tertiary and career preparation programmes give learners an entry point wherever they are starting from.
Campus and study
NMIT operates four campuses across Te Tauihu, including sites in Nelson and Richmond, and offers a virtual tour for those who cannot visit. Study can be done on campus, online or alongside work. Te Puna Mātauranga, the library learning centre, provides flexible study spaces, learning resources and academic help.
The institute presents the region as a place where practical, industry-linked study comes with a balanced lifestyle, a strong sense of community and real opportunities — reasons, in its view, that make the move worthwhile.
For international students
Both staff and students come from around the world, NMIT's qualifications are recognised internationally, and there are student exchange programmes. Support includes Study Navigators, who help plan a study path that fits around a learner's life, Learner Support for study and wellbeing, an Ākonga guide for new arrivals, and student-led services that include free counselling sessions.
