About the programme
The New Zealand Diploma in Animation (Level 5) is an NZQF Level 5 programme of 120 credits at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) that, in one year of full-time study, introduces the computer-generated techniques used across today's animation industry, from 3D modelling to motion capture.
The diploma offers a broad first look at animation and game design so students can try different disciplines and find where they excel. They learn 3D modelling of organic and hard-surface forms — characters, creatures, vegetation, buildings, vehicles, furniture — rigging a model with a skeleton so it can move, animation itself, dynamic effects such as fire, smoke, fluids, explosions, physics simulation and crowds, and CGI lighting, post-production and real-time shading for film and game engines.
Technical development courses show students how to use the coding interfaces built into professional CGI software to create their own tools where off-the-shelf options fall short. Professional practice prepares them for studio work and freelancing, covering business basics, legal and tax obligations, the implications of Te Tiriti o Waitangi for animation in New Zealand, the production pipeline and teamwork.
The year builds to a substantial CGI project of the student's own choosing, produced collaboratively with milestones and deadlines. Full-time and part-time options are available.
Graduates can finish with the diploma or continue to the New Zealand Diploma in Animation (Level 6) or the Bachelor of CGI.
