About the programme
The Certificate in Apparel + Fashion Technology is an NZQF Level 4 programme at Whitecliffe that gives beginners the technical grounding to make clothing from pattern to finished piece in one year of full-time study (120 credits).
No previous sewing background is assumed. Students learn to operate industrial sewing equipment and pick up the vocabulary of the trade, while also studying how fabrics behave, how patterns are drafted and what underpins creative fashion design. These skills are then put to work on complete garments such as skirts, trousers, shorts, shirts, tops and dresses, built with methods used in the industry.
The learning is overwhelmingly practical. Whitecliffe notes that written assignments are kept to a minimum; assessment is based on projects that show the accuracy of patterns, stitching and assembly. Classes run on weekday daytimes, most work is finished on campus, and the workroom stays available for independent practice while the campus is open. Classes are small and lecturers come from the fashion industry.
The certificate prepares students for both sustainable and commercial fashion. Graduates can look for entry-level work in garment production or move on within Whitecliffe to the Level 5 Diploma in Fashion and later the Level 7 Bachelor of Sustainable Fashion Design. The programme runs at the Auckland City (Symonds Street), Manukau and Wellington campuses.
