About the programme

The Diploma in Fashion is an NZQF Level 5 programme at Whitecliffe that builds advanced technical and creative fashion skills in one year of full-time study (120 credits), teaching students to design, construct and present their own collections.

It picks up where the Level 4 certificate leaves off and takes sewing and garment construction to a professional standard. Students work with manual flat pattern making and computer-aided pattern making, Adobe Illustrator and deeper textile knowledge, and gain a firmer grasp of production terminology. Design development and sustainable practices shaping the commercial fashion industry run through the year.

Two projects anchor the programme. In Resene Colour of Fashion, students experiment with contemporary palettes, interpret Resene colours in silk and present the results to a judging panel; selected students show their pieces at the Whitecliffe Annual Fashion Show and New Zealand Fashion Week. In the second, each student designs, develops and produces a two-outfit collection for the annual show.

Graduates can apply the elements and principles of fashion design, draw on historical and contemporary influences, understand supply chains and source textiles ethically, and critically assess the quality, aesthetics, wearability, comfort and sustainability of designs. Classes run four days a week, leaving one day free. Graduates can move into entry-level production roles or continue to the Bachelor of Sustainable Fashion Design. The diploma is offered at the Auckland City (Symonds Street), Manukau and Wellington campuses.
