About the programme

The New Zealand Diploma in Arts and Design (Level 5) is an NZQF Level 5 programme of 120 credits at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) that, over one year of full-time study, builds core skills in image making, photography, graphic and object design and art theory through guided, hands-on studio work.

The programme introduces the fundamental principles of art and design and gives a practical feel for a range of creative processes. Every course is compulsory: in each area — photography, image and drawing, visual language, digital art and design, object design, professional practice and an introduction to art and design history — students take a lab course and a project course. This lets them try every discipline before choosing a focus at higher levels.

Most of the time is spent in studios and labs taking ideas from concept to finished piece. Students learn to use research to develop ideas, respond to briefs and solve creative problems, critique their own and others' work and present what they make. Class exhibitions and community events offer a first taste of professional practice.

The diploma suits people who want to explore creative careers and gain a solid base. Graduates can move on to Level 6 or the Bachelor of Arts and Media, or start in entry-level roles in design, production and the arts. Students need their own Windows laptop with Adobe Creative Cloud and a digital SLR camera.
