About the programme
The Certificate in Fashion is an NZQF Level 4 programme at Whitecliffe that, over 18 weeks of full-time study (60 credits), teaches the core technical skills, textile knowledge and creative process needed to design, make and present your own fashion pieces.
The course starts with learning to sew and ends with designing and producing an outfit from scratch. Students cover the basics of pattern making and garment construction, handle textiles and professional equipment including industrial machines, and develop design thinking — how to take an idea through to a finished item and solve creative problems on the way.
Learning is project-based. Whitecliffe says written work is minimal; assessment relies on demonstrated skills in sewing, pattern drafting and assembly. Classes run four days a week, leaving one weekday free, for example for part-time work. Most tasks are completed in class, and the workroom is open for independent practice.
Students finish with a portfolio of completed garments. The certificate is designed for people with no prior experience and provides a direct pathway into Whitecliffe's Bachelor of Sustainable Fashion Design, as well as a base for entry-level jobs or internships in garment production. It is offered at the Auckland City (Symonds Street), Manukau and Wellington campuses.
