About the programme
The Certificate in Fine Arts is an NZQF Level 4 programme at Whitecliffe that introduces studio-based art practice over 18 weeks of full-time study (60 credits) and helps students assemble a professional portfolio.
Most of the content sits within fine arts and photo media — drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking, photography and moving image — with added design elements and some material from Whitecliffe's Design Innovation and Fashion + Sustainability areas, which underpin its degrees. Students sample a range of art-making processes and learn to interpret what they see and communicate ideas visually.
The programme runs across two terms. Term 1 covers painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and Open Media, an exploratory research approach. Term 2 pushes painting and drawing further and adds Multiple Media, Moving Image, and Exhibition and Portfolio Presentation. There are five studio classes a week of about half a day each, plus self-directed work, so part-time employment is possible. Classes are small, tutors are practising artists and students exhibit as part of the course.
It suits school leavers, career changers and returning learners who want to try full-time art study before a three-year degree. Graduates can move on to the Level 7 Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Design + Digital Media or Bachelor of Sustainable Fashion Design. The certificate is taught at the Auckland City (Symonds Street) and Manukau campuses.
