About the programme

The Bachelor of Commerce (Management or Marketing) is an NZQF Level 7 programme at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) that prepares graduates for operational leadership, strategic planning and decision-making in management and marketing roles. It carries 360 credits; a single major takes 3 years of full-time study and a double major three and a half years.

NMIT has taught commerce degrees since 1993, and the current version was redesigned in 2019 and is kept up to date with industry input. Students choose Management, Marketing or both, and add electives such as law, human resource management, logistics or international business. Beyond subject knowledge, the degree builds communication, teamwork, creative problem-solving, relationship-building and ethical practice.

Learning is applied: project and problem-based work, simulated business scenarios, flipped classes and case studies. Students also learn research methods and data analysis, and at Level 7 carry out directed research with expert supervision. The year has two 17-week semesters and an optional summer school; a full-time load is four courses per semester, each with two two-hour sessions a week and around 6 hours of independent study.

The degree runs on the Nelson and Marlborough campuses, and the first year, delivered as the New Zealand Diploma in Business Level 5, is also available online through eCampus NZ. Marlborough students can join Nelson classes via Webex, with exams held on campus. Earlier study or substantial work experience can be credited towards the degree.
