About the programme
The Bachelor of Business (BBus) is an NZQF Level 7 undergraduate degree at Auckland Institute of Studies (AIS) that prepares students for business careers across a wide range of industries. It carries 360 credits and takes between 28 and 36 months of full-time study.
The core of the degree is a set of twelve compulsory courses. Together they cover accounting systems, economics, mathematics and statistics, the basics of management and marketing, information systems, business finance, organisational decision-making, the modern workplace and compliance, and sustainability. One course is dedicated to culture and business practice in Aotearoa New Zealand. At least 75 of the 360 credits must be earned at Level 7.
On top of the core, students take a minimum of 120 elective credits from the study pathways: Accounting, Marketing, Facilities Management, Procurement and Supply Chain Management, Tourism and Hospitality Management, and Healthcare Management. AIS suggests a recommended course set for each pathway. The accounting route, for example, includes financial and management accounting, New Zealand taxation and auditing, while the marketing route covers consumer insights, marketing communications, applied digital marketing and marketing analytics.
The final stage offers a choice between a course on organisational improvement and a 402-hour internship, completed at 15 hours a week over no more than 28 weeks. The degree holds accreditation from CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), so students who choose their electives carefully can meet the academic requirements for membership of both bodies on the way to becoming qualified accountants.
The programme suits students who want a broad grounding in business combined with a specialist focus. AIS aims to produce graduates with both general and discipline-specific knowledge, practical experience of applying it and transferable skills valued by private, public and not-for-profit employers.
