About the programme
The New Zealand Diploma in Sport, Recreation and Exercise (Multi-Sector) (Level 5) is an NZQF Level 5 programme of 120 credits at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) that, in one year of full-time study, provides an entry-level qualification for the fitness industry or a stepping stone to further study.
The focus is not on playing sport but on the science of working with people: training methods, health and nutrition, anatomy and physiology, and how to motivate, train and coach others. Students learn the theory first and then put it into practice. Courses include applied anatomy, exercise physiology, movement theory, planning and delivering sport and recreation activities, leadership, the place of sport and health in New Zealand society, and academic and professional skills.
Facilities include an exercise science and physiology lab with the most up-to-date equipment in Te Tauihu and a dedicated on-site gym. Students also use the Saxton running track, TRU High Performance Gym, local pools and squash courts, and outdoor activities such as paddle boarding, kayaking, mountain biking, rafting and adventure racing become part of the learning.
The diploma suits people who enjoy sport and want to work with others in fitness, recreation or health. After the year, graduates can move to Level 6 and, after both diplomas, complete the AUT Bachelor of Sport and Recreation on the Nelson campus with one more year, or go into teacher training. The programme replaces the former Diploma in Applied Fitness.
