About the programme
The Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Management is an NZQF Level 8 qualification of 120 credits at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) that develops management capability over two semesters (9–12 months) and forms the first stage of the Master of Applied Management.
It combines theory, applied work and foundational research skills. All students take four advanced management courses: critical issues in management, design thinking and innovative entrepreneurship, managing in a digital world, and leadership and talent management. The other half of the diploma depends on the major: healthcare management, logistics and supply chain management, business analytics (with its own entry criteria), aquaculture management, or a multidisciplinary pathway with electives including agile management and sustainability.
Most majors include research. Applied research methods start in the first semester, and in the second, the Special Topic course lets students develop their own research idea in their major. The aquaculture major has no research courses and instead includes two 30-credit courses on sustainable aquaculture practice and on managing aquaculture businesses.
Study is on campus in Nelson. Full-time means 60 credits per semester and about 40 hours of study a week, around eight of them in weekday classes. Materials and submissions run through Moodle, and work uses APA7 referencing. Previous postgraduate study or extensive experience can be credited.
The diploma is open to graduates from any industry and to people with relevant professional experience. Graduates can continue to the Master of Applied Management with one or two further semesters of full-time study.
