About the programme
The Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Aquaculture is an NZQF Level 8 qualification of 120 credits at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) that, in one year of full-time study, turns degree-level science into practical skills for work in aquaculture and marine biology.
It builds an advanced understanding of sustainable aquaculture along with the technical skills to apply it. The programme has four parts: sustainable aquaculture practice (30 credits), aquaculture management (30 credits), research methodology (15 credits at Level 7) and a six-month research dissertation worth 45 credits. Students learn to evaluate aquaculture systems critically and propose innovations for sustainable growth in the sector. The curriculum was developed with the scientific community and industry representatives.
The dissertation includes a compulsory industry placement of at least 100 hours, during which students carry out research and apply what they learned on campus in a real workplace — either as an internship or within their current job. Past projects have covered biotechnology, specific fish species and the life cycle of a seaweed, hosted by research institutes, private companies and Crown research institutes. Each student is mentored one-to-one by an expert tutor.
Nelson is a hub for seafood research and production in New Zealand, giving students the chance to meet industry professionals and research organisations, which can open doors to employment. Part-time study is available, and distance study is possible for those working in a suitable aquaculture workplace, with compulsory residential workshops.
The diploma is aimed at science graduates. Afterwards, students can progress to the Master of Applied Science (Biodiversity Management) by completing only the 120-credit thesis.
