About the programme
The Postgraduate Diploma in Horticultural Science is an NZQF level 8 programme at Lincoln University that deepens knowledge of horticultural science, production and related fields so graduates can contribute to New Zealand's success in international markets. It carries 120 credits and takes 1 year of full-time study, normally two semesters.
Horticulture is one of the pillars of New Zealand's success abroad. To stay competitive, the industry needs a new generation of skilled, motivated and well-informed leaders. The programme is designed with that in mind, extending study in horticultural production, processing and marketing, plant pathology and plant science, viticulture and oenology, and research.
Students come into contact with international research projects run by Lincoln University and develop a clearer view of how New Zealand horticulture must change to meet overseas markets' expectations for quality produce. This helps them connect scientific knowledge with the practical needs of an export-focused industry.
The study plan is flexible: students complete 120 credits from the course schedule of the relevant master's degree across two semesters. The diploma can be taken as a standalone qualification or used as a step towards a master's degree. It is taught on the Lincoln University campus and suits graduates of a relevant bachelor's degree who want a leading role in horticulture. Students can lean towards production and processing, plant science and pathology, or viticulture and winemaking.
