About the programme
The Master of Applied Management is an NZQF Level 9 degree of 180 credits at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT), taking 18 months full-time, that prepares managers to lead people, processes and technology and to ground their practice in original applied research.
The programme blends theory, applied activities and research. Every student takes four advanced Level 8 courses: critical issues in management, design thinking and innovative entrepreneurship, managing in a digital world, and leadership and talent management. Students then choose a major — logistics and supply chain management, healthcare management or business analytics — or build a multidisciplinary profile from electives across the programme, including agile management and sustainability.
Research runs through the whole degree: applied research methods in the first semester, a special topic and advanced methods in the second, and a research proposal and project in the third. Students with solid master's-level research experience can apply to write a 60-credit thesis instead. To be awarded a major, the research must sit within that field, and supervisors support learners throughout.
Study is on campus in Nelson over three 17-week semesters, or longer part-time. There are no exams; grades come from individual and group assignments across the semester, written with APA7 referencing. Full-time study means roughly 40 hours a week, with classes on weekdays. A laptop is needed, courses run on Moodle, and students use the library and Office365.
The degree is open to graduates from any industry and to people with relevant professional experience who want to move into management or deepen a specific area. Prior study or extensive experience can be credited towards some courses.
