About the programme
The Bachelor of Computer Generated Imagery is an NZQF Level 7 programme at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) that trains students in animation and CGI for film, video games and advertising. It carries 360 credits over 3 years of full-time study.
The degree is built around job-ready skills, and students use the same animation and CGI software found in the industry. The range of work runs from large-scale effects such as blockbuster-style destruction to the fine detail that makes motion-capture characters believable.
Students first experiment with tools and techniques across the main areas of CGI: 3D modelling, rigging and animation, dynamic effects, lighting and post-production, and technical development. Project courses then let them go deeper into the area that interests them most, and the final stage combines advanced courses with a studio project. Professional practice courses prepare them for industry work.
Learners create their own projects to enter in annual festivals and competitions, and can help on feature films with guidance from tutors. The programme is taught in Nelson, full time or part time.
