About the programme
The Bachelor of Jewellery Design + Technology is an NZQF Level 7 programme at Whitecliffe that trains professional jewellers over three years of full-time study (360 credits), able to take a piece from first idea through to the finished product. Whitecliffe states that its jewellery programmes are the only jewellery and goldsmithing courses in New Zealand registered and accredited with NZQA.
The degree combines traditional craft with digital tools. Students work on design thinking, metal fabrication, stone setting, casting and 3D digital modelling (CAD), and explore a range of materials and technologies. Alongside hand skills and design principles, they learn how a jewellery business operates, along with entrepreneurship and managing resources and materials. Critical thinking, experimentation and sustainable design are emphasised throughout.
Most learning happens in the workshop, with classes on several weekdays and a dedicated jewellery bench for every student. Classes are small, usually 10 to 20 students, so tutors can give individual guidance. Students buy their own tool kit and materials such as metals, stones and consumables; a tool list is provided before the programme starts.
The aim is a graduate who can find a niche in the jewellery sector and enter the workforce as a practising jeweller, whether making custom pieces, working in production or building their own brand. Graduates can continue to a postgraduate certificate, diploma or master's in a relevant field.
