About the programme
The New Zealand Diploma in Animation (Level 6) is an NZQF Level 6 programme of 120 credits at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) that, over one year of full-time study, builds on the CGI skills gained at Level 5 and lets students go deeper into an area of their choice.
The second year revisits the same disciplines at a more advanced level. In 3D modelling students work on organic forms such as characters, creatures and natural objects as well as hard-surface structures like buildings, machinery and furniture. Rigging and animation cover preparing and controlling models for movement, while dynamic effects deal with simulating fire, smoke, fluids, explosions, physics and crowds. Lighting and post-production take a scene to its final frame, combining 3D with live action or real-time game engines.
Technical development courses teach students to script their own tools inside professional CGI software, and professional practice prepares them for studio and contract work: freelance business skills, legal and tax obligations, the implications of Te Tiriti o Waitangi for animation in New Zealand, production pipelines and teamwork.
Project work takes a bigger share of the year. In the second semester students choose one of two animation focus areas and deliver a substantial collaborative CGI project on a topic of their own, working to milestones and deadlines. Many then enter their work in film festivals around the country, individually or as a team.
The diploma can be completed on its own or used as a step into the final year of the Bachelor of CGI. Full-time and part-time study are available.
