About the programme

The Bachelor of Counselling and Addiction Practice is an NZQF Level 7 programme at Whitireia & WelTec that prepares counsellors and addiction practitioners over three years of full-time study (360 credits). Part-time options are also available.

The degree is applied in nature and builds skills valued across many social occupations, especially counselling and addiction practice. Graduates are expected to work professionally in line with the values and ethics of three New Zealand professional bodies: the addiction practitioners' association DAPAANZ, the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) and the New Zealand Christian Counsellors Association (NZCCA).

Delivery is blended, combining face-to-face classes with online learning, so students need a computer or laptop and internet access at home; a phone is not considered adequate. Classes are based at the Whitireia campus in Porirua. Selection looks beyond academic records: applicants' suitability for working with people is assessed through an interview, a health declaration, a safety check and referee reports.

The programme suits people who want a career in the helping professions, supporting others through difficult circumstances. Existing learning from the workplace, volunteering, professional development, other providers' qualifications or online courses can be recognised as prior learning and credited towards the degree.
