About the programme
The Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) is an NZQF Level 7 undergraduate degree at Lincoln University that prepares marketing professionals for organisations of every size. It carries 360 credits and takes 3 years of full-time study on the Lincoln University campus.
The programme starts from the questions marketing answers: how people learn about products and services, where they buy them, what they will pay and why one offer sounds better than another. Students build the analytical and professional skills marketing relies on, learn to make decisions that shape the future of brands, and consider what matters to consumers, society and the environment. Lincoln frames this as learning the science of persuasion and turning it into an art.
Students explore how products are designed, created, launched and made well known, what consumers expect of modern brands and the businesses behind them, and how purchase behaviour works. Graduates should be able to segment markets and position products, make evidence-based decisions from marketing data, evaluate and report on marketing performance, and weigh ethical and legal considerations.
Year one covers the commerce core plus suggested electives in areas such as design, psychology, tourism and food systems. Year two draws on social marketing and ethics, digital marketing and consumer behaviour. In year three students take Marketing Research, including a real-world research project that adds practical experience to their CV, and at least three options such as product design, sales management, Branding Aotearoa, promotion management, services marketing and marketing New Zealand products. An additional major or minor may be possible.
