About the programme
The Bachelor of Social Work is a NZQF Level 7 programme at Whitireia & WelTec that, over four full-time years (480 credits), equips students to work with individuals, families and communities on social problems and wellbeing.
The degree is built to meet the professional and educational standards of the Social Workers Registration Board (SWRB) and the Code of Ethics of the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers (ANZASW). Graduates leave with a recognised qualification, a solid grounding in social work and a route into higher study.
Students learn to advocate for social justice, support people going through crisis and help them reach the resources and services they need. Fieldwork placements take place in years three and four; some of them may require health screening or vaccinations, and students are told about this when their placement is confirmed.
The programme suits people who want a professional career in social services. Besides full-time study there is a part-time option. Existing experience, such as workplace learning, volunteering, professional development, other qualifications or online courses, can be assessed as prior learning and credited towards the degree. Teaching is based at the Porirua campus.
