About the programme

The Bachelor of Youth Development is a NZQF Level 7 programme at Whitireia & WelTec worth 360 credits and planned as 3 years of full-time study. Its main feature is the chance to complete a degree with existing youth work experience taken into account.

People who hold the NZ Diploma in Youth Work (Level 6), have Korowai Tupu industry registration and/or have worked as a youth worker for more than five years may have up to two years of the degree recognised through recognition of prior learning (RPL). The first step is a conversation with institute staff about what evidence will be needed.

In that discussion, staff and the student agree which courses remain and how they can be completed, either full-time or part-time. Delivery is blended, mixing face-to-face sessions with online learning, so students need a computer or laptop and internet at home; a phone is not enough. The programme includes placements that involve travel. It is based at the Porirua campus.

The degree is aimed at practising youth workers and people in the social services sector who want their experience turned into a bachelor's qualification.

Entry requirements

  • University degree entry requirements or equivalent practical, professional or educational experience in youth development or the social service sector
