About the programme
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Lincoln University is an NZQF Level 10 research programme and the university's highest research degree. It carries 360 credits and takes 3 years of full-time study.
Lincoln describes itself as an internationally respected land-based university doing research into new ways of tackling the complex challenges facing the biosphere. It treats its doctoral candidates as partners in that work, giving them contact with research and ideas from leading scientists and professional organisations in New Zealand and abroad.
The goal of the three-year, research-based programme is to develop the candidate's ability to analyse situations and evaluate research, and then to work with other leading thinkers to frame and test new ideas. The core of the degree is the candidate's own research, carried out under a supervisor from the university's staff.
Research at Lincoln takes place across faculties, centres of excellence and research centres, so preparing an application starts with checking that the topic fits. The university publishes a list of available master's and PhD supervisors and a set of postgraduate research projects. The steps are to confirm you meet the entry criteria, find a supervisor in your area, apply online and read the key rules and procedures for postgraduate study.
It suits strong researchers who want to work on questions of land use, natural resources and the environment.
