About the programme
The Bachelor of Sustainable Fashion Design is an NZQF Level 7 programme at Whitecliffe that trains fashion designers in ecological, regenerative and ethical ways of working over three years of full-time study (360 credits). Whitecliffe notes that the programme is pending NZQA approval, so its title and some details may change.
The content is organised into three linked strands: sustainable fashion research and practice, theoretical studies, and creative enterprise. Students learn pattern making, garment construction and tailoring, research and concept development, and experiments with surfaces and materials. Studio work is supported by courses in sustainable fashion practices, Earth-Centred Design, natural dyeing, fashion history and theory, fashion illustration and Adobe Creative Suite. The programme asks students to draw on cultural knowledge, social issues and values when thinking about fashion.
No sewing experience is needed: the first semester builds core technical skills in garment construction, patternmaking and industrial machines. There are no exams, as the degree is assessed entirely through coursework such as projects, presentations and practical work. Classes usually run three to four days a week, leaving at least one day free. In the final year students complete an industry internship, take part in industry projects and events, and produce a conceptual five-outfit collection shown at the annual Whitecliffe Fashion Show.
The degree suits people who want to challenge the way the fashion industry works. Graduates have launched their own sustainable labels, joined design rooms at established brands and gone on to master's study, including at Central Saint Martins in London. Further options include a postgraduate certificate, diploma or master's in a related field.
