About the programme
The Master of Horticultural Science (Research) is an NZQF level 9 research programme at Lincoln University in New Zealand that combines advanced training with research in the sciences most relevant to the horticultural industry. The standard route is 240 credits over two years of full-time study.
The degree is made up of 120 credits of coursework and a 120-credit research thesis. It concentrates on specific disciplines: Plant Science, Plant Protection, Viticulture and Oenology, and Soil Science.
Students agree the courses for their chosen speciality with their research supervisor, and Lincoln publishes a list of available supervisors. Typically, the first year consists of six courses from these disciplines and serves as research preparation, while the second is spent running experiments and writing the thesis. Applicants who already hold an honours degree can take a thesis-only route of at least 120 credits. Study is on the Lincoln University campus.
Lincoln says the mix of advanced instruction and research experience opens a wide range of careers in horticultural industries. The programme suits graduates of relevant bachelor's degrees who want to work on plant science, plant protection or wine at a research level.
