About the programme
The Master of Management (Healthcare) is an NZQF Level 9 degree at ICL Graduate Business School that develops managers and leaders for the healthcare sector. It is worth 180 credits and takes 12 or 16 months.
The curriculum is mapped to the competency framework of the Australasian College of Health Service Management (ACHSM), the professional body that sets standards for health service management in Australia and New Zealand. That framework stresses leadership, communication, strategic thinking and ethical governance, and the programme is built around the same capabilities. The qualification is approved by NZQA.
It follows on from undergraduate study in business or a related field, and relevant work experience is also accepted. Classic management and leadership theory is combined with specialist knowledge of healthcare management, covering both New Zealand-specific and international contexts. Healthcare papers deal with governance and health systems, the social and political environment of healthcare in New Zealand, and health informatics and innovation.
The curriculum consists of eight 15-credit papers and a 60-credit applied project. The longer option runs over four 16-week trimesters and the shorter over three. It suits people aiming to run medical centres, aged care facilities, health services and projects. Students must bring their own laptop or tablet.
Graduates should be able to build an engaged team culture and prepare plans and strategies that improve outcomes in healthcare organisations.
