ICL Graduate Business School is a private tertiary provider in central Auckland that teaches Business, Business Informatics and Early Childhood Education at levels ranging from diploma to master's degree.
About
The school started life in 2002, when Ewen Mackenzie-Bowie set it up within the Academic Colleges Group. Five years later he took the business over and merged it with the International College of Linguistics, which is where the initials ICL come from. Once most of its offering had moved to levels 7, 8 and 9, it took on its current name, ICL Graduate Business School.
Teaching is organised around three fields: Business, Business Informatics and Early Childhood Education. Qualifications run from level 5 diplomas through a bachelor's degree, graduate and postgraduate diplomas, up to master's level. The Master of Management looks at leadership in cultural and global settings and at frameworks for managing change; the Master of Business Informatics brings together enterprise innovation, IT service management, information security, digital transformation and project management; and the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE) trains educators for children from birth to six.
ICL belongs to ICL Education Group, alongside Bridge International College and Auckland English Academy, and the three share one educational philosophy built on 'learner autonomy' — the idea that students should take charge of their own learning. The school's Latin motto, Praesens Praecello, is rendered in English as 'Through determination, I excel'. Its stated values cover quality, integrity, collegiality, versatility and sustainability, with the last two framed in relation to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Beyond external evaluation, ICL takes part in several sector networks: Quality Tertiary Institutions, which represents private tertiary providers in New Zealand; HEPP-QN, an Australian quality network for higher education providers; and the Australasian Academic Integrity Network, which focuses on honest academic practice.
What stands out
- Three fields, diploma to master's. Business, Business Informatics and Early Childhood Education are taught across the full range of levels, with most programmes now sitting at levels 7 to 9.
- Routes into university. Students can progress within ICL's own programmes or move on through academic partnerships with universities including AUT, Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington.
- Business informatics as a specialism. The Master of Business Informatics and the related Postgraduate Diploma link business analysis with digital transformation, information security and industry standards.
- Early childhood teacher training. The Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE) is open to people without an education background and weaves Te ao Māori and teaching theory through each paper.
- Speaker and guest lecture series. Students hear from practitioners through the ICL Speaker Series, the ICL FutureTech talks on technology careers and ECE guest lectures delivered by early childhood providers.
Campus and study
ICL is based in the middle of Auckland's city centre, so students have the city on their doorstep. The school emphasises personalised, smaller classes and lists flexible study options and pathway diplomas — designed as a stepping stone to a degree — among the things that set it apart.
For international students
The student body is drawn from many countries, and graduates single out the chance to study alongside classmates from around the world. The website includes a section on student life in New Zealand aimed at international students, and each intake begins with an orientation for newcomers. Students who need to build their English can turn to Bridge International College and Auckland English Academy, both part of the same group.
