About the programme
The Certificate in Information Technology Essentials is an NZQF Level 4 programme at Whitecliffe that provides a first grounding in IT, with transferable skills for entry-level support roles, over 18 weeks of full-time study (60 credits).
It is designed as a starting point for people new to the field. Theory and hands-on work run side by side across the key concepts and systems: computer hardware and software, operating systems, applications, networking, database management, business analysis and user interface design. Students also meet project management and planning tools.
By the end, graduates should be able to support hardware and software using what they know about computers, operating systems and networks; understand how business analysis, databases and user experience shape an organisation's system requirements; contribute to interface design using web design concepts; and apply basic programming and planning to meet a technical brief. Professional communication and ethical, legal practice in IT form another strand.
The course is practical and serves both as a route into junior roles and as preparation for further study. Within Whitecliffe, next steps include the Level 5 Certificate in Information Technology, Level 5–6 diplomas in technical support, web development and design, and software development, and the Level 7 Bachelor of Applied Information Technology. Students are advised to have their own device that meets Whitecliffe's specifications; Chromebooks and most tablets are not supported. The programme is listed for the Auckland City (Symonds Street), Manukau and Christchurch campuses.
