About the programme
The Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology is a one-year NZQF Level 8 programme at Whitecliffe worth 120 credits that prepares IT graduates for senior technology roles and faster career progression. Students go deeper into a chosen field: cyber security, ubiquitous computing, data analysis or machine learning.
The diploma builds on what students already know, developing research capability and innovative solutions within a chosen topic. Graduates learn to critically assess existing IT knowledge, analyse complex scenarios and design solutions with advanced tools while weighing cultural and social impact. The programme also covers leading and managing IT projects, sharing evidence-based results with industry and research communities, and applying the legal, ethical and social norms of the profession.
Some specialist courses are 85% aligned with industry certifications, so students can prepare for Ethical Hacking, Network Defender, Digital Forensics and Chief Information Security Officer credentials alongside their studies. Whitecliffe says it is the only New Zealand tertiary provider holding Academic Partner status with EC-Council, and it also partners with Microsoft, CompTIA, Red Hat, Oracle and Cisco, giving students free training materials for their international certifications. Teaching staff combine PhD-qualified academics with certified industry practitioners.
The diploma can be studied full-time or part-time at the Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch campuses, and students use their own laptop meeting Whitecliffe's specifications. It suits those looking to advance in the IT industry or move on to higher study; the natural next step is the Level 9 Master of Information Technology with specialisations in data science and cyber security.
