Yoobee College of Creative Innovation is a private creative and technology college with campuses in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, teaching design, animation, film, IT and marketing both on campus and online.
About
For around three decades, and under several earlier names, Yoobee has trained animators, filmmakers, designers, game developers and technologists. The college describes itself as the largest creative and technology college in New Zealand.
Its teaching model rests on three ideas. Expertise takes time — Yoobee cites the '10,000 hours' notion — so rather than years of lectures, students spend most of their time practising and producing work to an industry standard. Mentorship comes next, delivered through small classes and plenty of face-to-face contact with tutors. Finally there are relationships: compact campuses make it easier to find a peer group, and industry contacts are meant to outlast the course itself.
Yoobee belongs to Yoobee Colleges Ltd, a group of specialist providers that also includes the NZ School of Tourism, Cut Above Academy for hairdressing and barbering, the Elite School of Beauty & Spa and the Healthcare Academy of New Zealand. Students enrol with Yoobee Colleges Ltd, which also awards the qualification. Across the group, qualifications range from certificates and micro-credentials up to diplomas, degrees and postgraduate study.
According to the college, graduates have gone on to employers ranging from rocket launch companies, via the Faculty of Technology, to studios bringing superheroes to the screen, via the Faculty of Animation. Yoobee also states a commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
What stands out
- Rookies Certified School. Yoobee holds Rookies Certified School status, an international recognition of creative schools whose training is judged current and relevant.
- Toon Boom recognition. It is one of just two New Zealand schools named a Toon Boom Centre of Excellence for 2D animation, a skill set much in demand at major studios.
- Five creative fields. Design (graphic, web and UX), technology, 2D and 3D animation, film, and a marketing strand that blends design, tech and entrepreneurship.
- Technology and AI. The tech side covers programming, cloud computing, cyber security and web, app and game development, along with AI for Creative Industries, the Intro to AI Certificate, the Diploma in Cloud Computing and Cybersecurity and the Diploma in Cloud Engineering.
- Flexible routes into film. Aspiring filmmakers can begin with a six-month introductory course or go straight into a one-year full-time diploma, with options spanning film production and animated film.
Campus and study
Yoobee runs several campuses: the Auckland City Road Campus and the South Seas Campus, plus campuses in Wellington and Christchurch. They are deliberately kept small so that students and tutors get to know one another. For anyone who cannot attend in person, a range of programmes can be studied online, at a time and place that suits the learner.
For international students
The college's website has dedicated sections for international students, for disability and neurodiverse learner support, for its Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of ākonga/learners and for wellbeing and safety while studying. Course advisors can talk applicants through study options, enrolment and the choice of campus.
